How do you beat writer's block?

My brother is an aspiring fiction writer and 4th year English major. For Christmas, I would like to make him a "writer's block survival kit". What type of objects/techniques do you find effective for beating writer's block?

Any suggestions?

you could look at places he could visit, or places that writers he admires come from or have visited and see if you could buy train/travel tickets to them so he could get inspired(oh and perhaps buy him a sketchbook/notebook/camera/print credits for recording his visits...
or perhaps you could look up famous(or say ones rated ie. top 100) fiction books on ie. google books and extract quotes or one liners from them that you think could be story starters or topics or interesting twists etc. and stick each in a scrap book(with references of who wrote the book and the title?) you could also add random images of different places/locations/rooms of where he could set scenes and objects that could be involved in the story...
or you could put together a box of things to help him unwind as writings supposed to be fun: some movies, some music, food goodies, coffee/hot chocolate, something to make him laugh(always the best medicine) and something to relase stress-a dart board or perhaps a stress ball for when those late nights working arrive near deadlines. You could perhaps also add a selection of random items like a mini-dress up kit so he can get into characters minds, hats, spectacles anything unusual really lol.

Hope that helps, great idea by the way : )
