prevent colors running in cotton fabric?
How do I prepare/wash and dry new cotton flannel fabrics so they dye colors don't run all over? I will be making a quilt of some lights and darks combined and am washing and drying in HOT water to make sure it will all shrink before I cut.
Soak them in COLD water....Then add a LOT of salt , (A few cups), dissolve the salt well......Let them soak for at least 24 hours in the cold salty water.
When material is dyed, it should always be done in salty water as the salt 'sets' or 'fixes' the dye. If the dye has not been 'set' properly, 'bleeding' can be reduced a lot by salting after the dyeing. Also ALWAYS wash in cold water, and it doesn't hurt to add a cup of salt to the wash water also.
