Closed-stitch on machine for thick, solid lines?
I have a Necchi quilting machine. I have been making stuffed animals lately, but I am having difficulty achieving a solid thick stitch to outline eyes and make smiles.. you know, where the stitch would actually look like a fat thick line, without spaces between the thread. I have been told that using the buttonhole stitch with a butthole foot would achieve this look. I have been using this, but it is fraying the edges of the fabric and not creating a solid enough line, and it doesn't look very clean. What other stitches/options do I have, or do I need to go out and buy a new machine?
Does your machine do satin stitch? That's probably the easiest, particularly if you use a thicker thread (you'll probably need a topstitching needle for heavier thread). One of the ways to make satin stitch really stand up is to stitch the feature twice: once with a stitch about 2mm narrower than the width you want, and the second time with the wider stitch.
You're probably also going to want to use stabilizer under the fabric for good satin stitching.
If you want just narrow, heavy lines look for a "triple stitch" on your machine -- each straight stitch goes forward, back, forward so you get three thicknesses of thread. Might want to put "bobbin thread" used for machine embroidery on the bobbin for that one. Again, stabilizer helps.
