How much fabric would I need to make a queen sized blanket?
I want to make a blanket out of zebra print material because I'm re-doing my room and that's the theme. How much would I need? I kind of want like fleece or something warm, but not hot. Any sites I can get fabric for cheap??
I hope you are in America otherwise you will likely have to convert to meters. They'll probably do this at your local fabric store if you aren't sure how to convert it on your own.
A standard Queen sized comforter (duvet) is 90"x108" If you want to just make a cover for your existing comforter this is pretty easy.
If you find 90" fabric in zebra you will need 3 meters for one side. I'd go with a solid (therefore cheaper) fabric for the underside.
It does exist but 90" fabric is somewhat hard to find and usually the prints are pretty limited. Otherwise you will likely find 45" or 60" wide fabric of which you would need 6 yards for one side of the comforter cover. (two lengths 3 yards each, one split again length wise) If it is 60" fabric you will have leftover to trim pillowcases to match!
FLEECE usually comes in 60" width and is often double sided. It also doesn't HAVE to be sewed around the edges as it won't fray. If you choose that I would just keep it that width and make it a throw. It should just cover the top of your mattress. So you would need something as your main blanket or quilt that would go well as the sides of it would be showing. If you did that, you'd need 3 yards to get the length you need and you'd have probably about a foot at the end you could trim off to make a throw pillow for a chair to match. You have to cut very straight if you don't want to sew the edges though, so give yourself a little leeway.
There should be lots of sewing experts at your local fabric store and fabric store ladies usually do the job out of love of craft not for the money, so are normally very helpful if you just ask. They also won't be offended if you bring in fabric you bought elsewhere if you don't draw attention to the fact that your fabric didn't come from them.
