How does The Last Supper Reflect The Renaissance?
I have to write a paper on how Leonardo Da Vinci's painting "The Last Supper" reflects the Renaissance.... any expertise/opinions? thankkks.
This is not an exhaustive list - just some pointers to get you off the mark.
Look at who commissioned the painting (Ludovico Sforza) was he a typical Renaissance man? Does the painting reflect how he wished to portray himself? I already know the answer but you need to find this out in order to complete your task.
Secondly look at where the fresco is (the refrectory of the Convent of Santa Maria della Grazie). Does the subject reflect Renaissance practice as regards subject choice? Look at how Leonardo has organised the work using geometry. Does this reflect his friendship with Renaissance mathematician Lucca Paccioli and in turn does this link up with Renaissance philosophy?
What does the media that Leonardo used tell you about Renaissance artistic practice? What do contemporary reports of the work tell is about how a Renaissance painter worked. Is there any further documentation to support your essay such as contracts etc?
My last tip would be for you to compare this work to another 'Last Supper' by Ghirlandaio. Ghirlandaio's rendering is typically Renaissance in composition and Leonardo's differs considerably. By comparing a painting within its own iconographic type, you can discover much.
Hope this helps.
