Sewers or Arty people give a little help?
I am putting stretchy lace onto the top of an umbrella, where the fabric usually goes.
It seems a bit droopy , so I took it in as tight as it would go and even put a dart on the alternate struts between that didnt have seams on them. (when I ad the fringe the weight doesnt pull out the wrinkles) I hope this makes sense. Im at my wits end. I have taken off as much as I can to tighten it, got any other ideas for me?
I have worked with decorative umbrellas/parasols and they can be tricky. Do you have to use the stretchy lace or can you find a non-stretchy lace? Stretchy lace will continue to stretch and "droop" the tighter that you pull it. Even tucking or darting will not make it more taut, but might also distort the lace pattern and could cause the material to "frizz up" in places.
Another thought here: Is the stretchy lace stretchable in all directions or does it just stretch from top to bottom OR side edge to side edge as it was woven and wrapped on the fabric bolt? Do you know what I'm saying? If the lace is stretchable in ALL directions, it would be very difficult to stretch it across the umbrella ribs (struts) without it drooping. If, however, it only stretches in one direction (top/bottom) or (edge/edge), it makes a big difference in whether or not the lace droops, according to how you laid out and cut your gore (panel) pieces.
Are you working with a pattern or freehanding? You say that you put a dart on alternate struts between that didn't have seams on them. How many ribs/struts? If six, then do you have three seamed gores/panels? If eight, then do you have four seamed gores/panels? If yes to either, this could be part of the problem. In the Victorian parasols that I've constructed, I've allowed one gore between ribs, and tacked each seam in 3-4 places along each rib. More time-consuming, yes, but it kept the gore from riding up the rib and kept it taut, not droopy, and eliminated any wrinkling.
I'm going to presume that you are edging the bottom of the umbrella with fringe, but whether it is ball fringe or chainette fringe, it is not weighty enough to pull out any wrinkles in the gores. It's merely decoration, not strengthening or stabilizing.
Wish I could be there to help you troubleshoot this. I've always had to figure it out myself because nobody could visualize what I was trying to do. I've had some real hair-pulling sessions on the umbrella/parasol projects, not to mention ideas I've had for other "unusual" crafting/sewing that no one had yet invented or even designed with a pattern for me to follow.
Don't know if any of this has helped or hindered, but if you can add additional details to your question, I'll try to modify my answer, if I can help you solve this dilemma or at least offer additional suggestions.
